Solid Waste Worker – Position Opening

Work involves heavy manual labor in the collection and disposal of refuse, special pick-up items, brush/yard waste and recyclables on a scheduled basis. This may include riding on a refuse collection vehicle, walking to designated disposal areas, emptying containers into truck, using hand and other tools to pick-up general curbside trash and other duties as directed. Work is performed under the supervision of the Public Works Director with some latitude and the use of some independent judgment within established standards and practices.

Work is performed outside on a varied work schedule that may include weekends, holidays, and overtime.

Position requires positive interaction with City team members and the public.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Ability and willingness to work constantly with unpleasant waste materials.
• Sufficient physical strength and agility to lift, move and carry very heavy objects and to work under all conditions of weather, in a safe manner, for extended periods of time.
• Ability to understand and comply with oral instructions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma preferred. Two (2) years of experience or similar labor-intensive work - Solid Waste experience preferred. Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License. A Commercial Florida Driver’s License Class “B” is preferred. A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be considered for the minimum qualifications.

This is a nonexempt, full-time position at an hourly rate of $17.00 with an excellent benefit package.

The selection process will include interview, physical examination, drug screening, and background check.
